Mention of a VW campervan instantly calls to mind images of good friends, good times, tie-dyed fun, peace signs, salt-water surf, and laid-back summer drives. It is safe to say these vehicles have become a pop culture icon.

Volkswagen enthusiasts are quick to point out that these popular vans are like no other automobile on the road today. While they do not have a reputation for being particularly fast, VW camper vans are definitely unique. Usually painted with an array of vibrant colors, they are also easily recognizable by passersby and other drivers.

Most VW campers, which have been produced since the early 1950s, get an average of 25 to 30 miles per gallon. The majority of models feature a combination of comfortable seating options (which can be easily rearranged for sleeping purposes), curtains, electrical outlets, storage cabinets, and some type of folding table. Select higher-end models may even contain pop-up side awnings, a sink, a small stove, and an ice chest --every accessory necessary for a comfortable and fun-filled camping trip or cross-country adventure.

Sometimes known as the microbus or split-screen bus, the camper's body style and engine components gradually evolved throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, making it more economical and aesthetically modern.

In recent years, interest in these iconic, retro (and not to mention roomy) vehicles has dramatically increased. Many individuals now invest a great deal of time and money in an effort to fully restore older models. In the VW campervan world, vintage seems to be back in style and more popular than ever.
